Taxi drivers in Sheffield unhappy about CCTV proposal

Taxi drivers in Sheffield are uniting in a bid to put the brake on a proposal by the city council  to make fitting CCTV cameras in their vehicles compulsory.

The council have put wheels in motion to install the cameras because they believe it would help reduce abuse and violent attacks, so they claim that such a move would be in the drivers’ own interests.

However, the big stumbling-block is that, under the proposals, the drivers would have to pay for the cameras themselves and many have said that they simply cannot afford it.

It is a dilemma for all concerned, and the drivers now have a worrying period to endure before a decision which is expected to be made by councillors early next year.
