Ryedale funding row over CCTV

Many Ryedale residents in Yorkshire are furious that CCTV and surveillance systems may be put in jeopardy after a row over funding.

Those in the local council who objected to funding the cameras and paying for new surveillance said that they had doubts as to whether it was an efficient use of money, especially in the current economic climate.

But residents have blasted this opinion, claiming that CCTV cameras and other surveillance initiatives should be a priority as they curb anti social behaviour and significantly reduce drinking related problems in the area’s town centres.

It is believed that many people want the money to be spent in other areas. A formal report to Ryedale District Council also recommends that the entire allocation of money available should be ring-fenced into a Ryedale Development Fund which would be spent on projects that deliver or protect employment in the immediate area.

As a consequence, many residents believe that the area’s crime rates may rise and that anti social behaviour will start to increase. CCTV in the area has proved a god-send to many people and has substantially reduced anti social behaviour numbers.
