Petition for more CCTV Cameras

Anti-social behaviour has become such a problem at a tower block in Wednesbury that dozens of residents have signed a petition calling for the installation of CCTV cameras.

On November 26 Sandwell Homes, which manages Russell House and many other similar high-rise blocks across the borough, will further investigate the situation in consultation with the residents.

It is understandable that the people living there are keen on the additional protection and security that CCTV can offer because Russell House has recently had a £2.8 million upgrade which includes special wires put on the exterior of the building to deter pigeons and, in some cases, new kitchens and renovated balconies, the latter complete with with artificial grass.

If the go-ahead is given it will come at a cost. Tenants and leaseholders in areas which already have CCTV and concierge services pay weekly service charges as part of their rent. Those payments are currently covered by Housing Benefit, for those who receive it, but this is under review as part of the Government proposals for Welfare Reform.

Sandwell Homes opened its CCTV and concierge control room in Oldbury in May 2010
