New safety tips for London – text alerts and more CCTV

The new report includes over 120 safety recommendations to protect London from terrorist threats

A new report published at the end of October, outlines 120 recommendations to protect London from terrosists attacks, including more CCTV cameras and public text message alerts.

The proposal concentrates on a number of new safety measures in order to prepare the capital city and members of the public in the event of a terrorist threat.

Lord Toby Harris of Haringey has been appointed by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to carry out a review of possible safety measures that could be put in place following the terrorist attacks in Brussels and Paris.

A number of safety measures are already in place in the capital, including armed police officers on tube trains but the report does propose a further 127 recommendations to help with terrorist response times.

More changes have been recommended by Lord Harris, who urges the Government to give consideration to them.

Other changes include installing more CCTV cameras on all mainline trains and underground trains and extra security measures on and around the River Thames, plus the possibility of being able to send members of public a text message alert in the event of a terrorist threat.

A possible threat last week on a tube train, which was dealt with by the Metropolitan Police, British Transport Police and emergency services, is a constant reminder that terror threats on the capital are more than likely and the threat level remains high.

“A serious terrosist attack remains highly possible and we cannot be complacent,” said Lord Harris.

The Mayor of London said that the recommendations needed to be looked at in depth and considered over the next few months.

The Lord Harris review will receive a formal published response after a short while.
