Malvern gets tough on anti-social behaviour
Malvern has gone mobile in a bid to cut crime.
The District Council introduced mobile CCTV cameras in a new initiative designed to increase the effectiveness of the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour in the area, and the early signs are promising.
Latest figures reveal that, in some parts of the town, anti-social behaviour has been slashed by almost by almost half over the last year, when protection was provided by 14 static cameras in various locations.
With maintenance and monitoring costs running high, coupled with the fact that the static cameras rarely recorded any incidents taking place, a decision was made to introduce three mobile cameras, one of the main advantages being that they can be moved around to cover the latest blackspots.
Such has been the impact that five recordings have already been used as evidence in criminal proceedings, with the police having remote access to the cameras and the ability to view and control Malvern Hills Community Safety Partnership, which funded the cameras, say figures show a 21 per cent reduction in anti-social behaviour across the Malvern Hills District, and the scheme has been particularly successful in and the Chase ward, where it has fallen by 48 per cent.
