Liverpool Mayor given tour of CCTV control room
Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson saw for himself the efficiency and value of the town’s CCTV monitoring system when he was given a tour of the control room.
While he was there he saw footage of a man allegedly involved in a racist incident which showed him leaving the scene of the crime. He was then tracked all the way home, where he changed clothes. When he went back out police found him hiding in a wheelie-bin and arrested him.
The Mayor said that he was highly impressed by the team running the operation and the way they kept a watchful eye on Liverpool’s criminals.
He added: “While it’s really challenging and tough for us, one of the great successes is our CCTV team. We are using our limited resources well to work to protect our communities.”
He said that the war on crime was still being won, despite government cut-backs to community safety funding, which in the last year amounted to £705,000.
The council is to spend £1.5m this next year and Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Kennedy has agreed to give £1 in grants for this financial year.
As the council cabinet approved the coming year’s Citysafe plan for the coming year, they said the council was responsible for running what is considered to be the best CCTV operation in Europe, and that it was crucial helping to keep the streets safe.
The plan for the coming year reveals that there had been an overall reduction in crime of 4%, with 825 fewer people reporting being victims of crime.
