Job losses at London Midland mean more CCTV Cameras

Because of job losses at train operator London Midland, CCTV will have to be installed in order to keep lifts in stations up and running for the disabled and the elderly.

There will be job losses in the ticket office as well as other areas and this means that CCTV cameras will have to be installed so that workers at other locations will be able to monitor the lifts when nobody is there. This, in effect, means that passengers will still be able to use the lifts without a member of staff being present, and it also means that should a lift malfunction, the cameras will be able to alert staff, so that problems can be sorted pretty quickly.

Despite obvious anger about job losses, many bosses believe that the system will save them money in the long term. However, some anti CCTV campaigners have voiced concerns about the problems that may arise should a lift malfunction and the CCTV cameras are not working as they should be.

One councillor said that should a camera not be working properly, someone could be stuck in a  lift for hours without anyone knowing.
