Do CCTV budget cuts mean we are more vulnerable?

With regards to the latest government cuts, it is hardly surprising that many people are concerned about public safety, the amount of police on the beat, and the potential rise in crime that will stem from the cutting of the policing budget.

Only last year the country was left shocked and terrified after riots gripped many major cities such as London and Birmingham, causing untold damage to businesses and homes, and leaving many people injured – with some people even needing hospital treatment.

Fast-forward a year and you’d expect more police keeping tabs on potential gangs planning on rampaging through our streets, and you’d also anticipate that there’d be more community officers offering support to the most deprived people in our society. Unfortunately however, this isn’t the case. The cuts have bitten the police sector hard and because of this, we as a society feel more vulnerable than ever before.

So, how, if anything, are we protected? Well, according to experts, CCTV is now our biggest protection and armour in the fight against crime and is classed as the product that can safeguard the public better than anything else.

Luckily for many councils, and local businesses however, CCTV systems are not expensive to install and maintain, meaning we should always be able to rely on them to protect us when we most need it.

Again, according to experts, we are also more reliant on CCTV because new systems can be integrated with mobile technology to make it quicker and easier for police to catch suspected criminals.  Thus, as well as better image resolution on the newer cameras, means that there are fewer officers on the beat, but there are consequently more officers available to sift through images and find offenders – which could lead to a quicker arrest.

Regardless of whether you think there should be more officers on the beat, one thing has been proven; CCTV should never be underestimated.
