CCTV gets the “hump”

We are used to seeing CCTV cameras in public places such as on high streets, on private property and on business premises; but maybe you should start getting used to seeing them on our waterways and canals too.

This is because the Canal and River Trust is preparing to install its first CCTV camera on a humpback bridge in a bid to catch motorists who crash into it. It is believed if the project proves a success, more cameras will be installed on similar troublesome bridges.

The charity, which keeps an eye on nearly 3,000 bridges across the country, said that drivers don’t understand the cost and effort that goes into repairing the bridges after they have been crashed into. It is hoped that the appearance and installation of the cameras will alert drivers to slow down and take extra precaution.

The first camera will be switched on at Caunsall Bridge in Worcestershire which has been hit six times in the last eighteen months and is currently undergoing over £30,000 of repairs. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and take particular care over humpback bridges.

Plans for more CCTV cameras to be installed on similar bridges have also received plenty of support.
