CCTV cars proposed in Essex
A debate is raging in Essex after it was announced that ‘CCTV cars’ could soon be patrolling the area in a bid stop people parking in dangerous places, with parents parking outside schools a specific target.
Whilst some safety campaigners believe the idea is a good one, Essex council leader Neil Stock has said that he is totally against the plans. He believes that there are better ways of tackling parking problems outside schools and has said that educating people about parking habits is the better way forward.
Despite Mr Stock’s opposition, however, plans for funding have already begun to be drawn up. The North Essex Parking Partnership has been making enquiries into obtaining cash, and bailiff company Equita has proposed to supply and operate a CCTV car within the area. It is believed that the vehicle and software costs could come to over £60,000 if the plans were given the go-ahead.
The car would patrol schools, clearways, pedestrian crossings, bus stops and taxi ranks to check if anyone was flouting parking rules. The car would also boast automatic number plate recognition technology.
