CCTV Cars bring in £1m
Sutton Council is cashing in on the success of their CCTV cars.
According to figures released last week more than £1 million has been collected since they were introduced in March last year. That was when the remit of the cars, originally brought in to enforce parking regulations outside schools, was extended to include patrols across the borough bringing to book motorists flouting parking rules.
An additional vehicle was obtained after residents expressed their concerns about inconsiderate parking, but there have now been complaints from motorists with regard to being filmed while parking on double yellow lines.
One motorist contested a £55 fine for parking illegally for just 19 seconds while dropping off her sister and she was immensely relieved when the ticket was rescinded on appeal.
There are claims that the rise in fines over two years suggests that the CCTV cars are not dealing with the root of the problem, but Sutton’s Environment and Neighbourhood Committee insists that they listened to residents and businesses who asked for the additional smart car to tackle a mounting problem of inconsiderate parking.
They argue that the cars are the most efficient way to help traffic run smoothly while at the same time delivering value for money to residents.
