Call for CCTV to be mandatory in abattoirs in Wales
A Welsh Assembly member has called for CCTV to be made mandatory in abattoirs across Wales in a bid to keep an eye on animal welfare at the point of slaughter.
Rebecca Evans, AM for Mid and West Wales made her feelings known during a recent debate. She said that making CCTV mandatory in all houses would send a strong message to consumers that Wales is serious about delivering excellence at every step.
She added that, in her opinion, it was the most logical approach to the recent new ruling by the European Council that requires the compulsory monitoring of loss or consciousness when an animal is stunned or ritually slaughtered. She believes that the use of a CCTV monitoring system is the cheapest and most practical way to conform to the regulation.
One farming union is not happy about the proposals for CCTV, however, as they believe they will have to pick up the cost for the new ruling.
