ANPR usage on the increase at Petrol forecourts

Plans to install hi-tech CCTV cameras at petrol stations has fuelled further debate about the use of such surveillance systems.

As things stand there are many forecourts where drivers can fill up their cars only after a camera has logged the vehicle’s number plate.

It is a system designed to deter motorists from driving off without paying for their petrol.

Now the latest government proposals, currently under debate, are an attempt to prevent an uninsured or untaxed car from being filled up.

The new hi-tech cameras use ANPR to automatically cross-reference with the DVLA’s huge database. This would mean that drivers would be forced to insure and tax their car – or they would not be able to obtain any petrol.

Many people are in favour of the plans, bearing in mind the fact that one in 25 drivers in the UK do not have insurance and somewhere in the region of 160 people are killed and 23,000 injured very year by uninsured and untaxed drivers.

However, some petrol retailers have voiced their opposition, claiming that it puts cashiers, who already get plenty of flak from motorists angry about rising fuel prices, at even greater risk
